提到“not only … but also”引导的句子时，大家都会想到这样一条造句规则：not only在句首，句子要用部分倒装。很多语法书上都是这么写的。然而这句话极具误导性，甚至可以说是错误的。这是一个“盲人摸象”式的结论，并不能真正教会我们如何正确使用该结构。我们可以根据这条规则造出下面这样的句子。
1、 a. not only does john like english but also speaks it very well.
我们看到，这里的not only的确在句首，并且句子把主语john放在助动词does的后面，是部分倒装的形式。也就是说，上面的a句完全符合上述的造句规则。因此，按理说a句应该是正确的。然而这个句子的结构却是错误的。这是因为片面的语法规则误导了我们，让我们看不到“not only … but also”倒装结构的本质。那么它的本质是什么呢？下面笔者就来作详细地分析。
“not only … but also”倒装句的本质分析
上文提到的“not only在句首，句子要用部分倒装”这歌原则是片面的、误导的，甚至是错误的，正确的思路应该是下面三步推导所揭示的“一个中心，两个基本点”。
一个中心 ：这个中心就是not only和but also是并列连词，因而其要接并列结构或者说平行结构。也就是说，not only后面的结构与but also后面的结构要对称，比如，两者后面接的都是名词、形容词、动词、副词、介词等短语或者都是句子。
基本点一 ：当not only和but also所接的并列结构都是句子时，此时not only必然出现在句首。而由于not only含有否定词，此时就会引发另外一条造句规则，即下面的“基本点二”。
基本点二： 当否定词位于句首，句子要用部分倒装。
结合上面两个基本点，我们可以推断出，not only出现在句首的句子是要采用部分倒装。
由此可见，“not only在句首，句子要用部分倒装”这句话无法告诉我们上面的逻辑思路，不能告诉我们有关这个问题的全景图：① not only和but also是并列连词；②两者所接的成分都是句子（若接短语，则无须倒装）；③否定词位于句首，句子要用部分倒装。简言之，“not only在句首，句子要用部分倒装”这句话忽略了“but also后面也必须是句子”这个前提。因此，上面的a句是错误的，因为but also后边接的是动词短语speaks it very well，而not only接的是句子，这就导致not only和but also所接的结构不平行，违背了并列连词用法的基本原理。要想保留倒装结构不改变，我们需要把but also后边的动词短语改为句子，这里只需要添加主语he即可，即写成：“not only does john like english but also he speaks it very well.”同理，b句中的not only和but also所接的结构也不平行：not only后面接了动词短语likes english，而but also接的是句子。要想不倒装，我们需要把but also后边的句子改为动词短语，这里我们只需要去掉主语he即可，即写成：“john not only likes english, but also speaks it very well.”
“not only … but also”的用法
下面笔者来系统总结一下“not only … but also”的用法。
接短语（不倒装）
当“not only … but also”接各种性质的短语时，句子不用倒装。请看下面的例句。
2、 not only john but also mary likes english.
解析：这里“not only … but also”接的是两个名词john和mary，充当并列主语。我们看到，此时not only也是在句首，但句子并没有倒装，原因就在于它引导的不是句子。
very special person changed not only my life but also my perspective on humanity.
解析：这里的“not only … but also”接的是两个名词短语my life和my perspective on humanity，充当谓语changed的宾语，句子也无需倒装。
值得注意的是，“not only … but also”在接短语时，要保证not only与but also所接的短语结构一致。请比较下面这组例句。
4、 a. petroleum is used not only to make fuels but also in plastics. (×)
b. petroleum is used not only to make fuels but also to make plastics. (√)
c. petroleum is used not only in fuels but also in plastics. (√)
解析：这组例句的a句之所以不正确，是因为句中的not only后面接的是不定式短语to make fuels，而but also后面接的是介词短语in plastics，二者的结构不一致。而b句中not only和but also后面接的都是不定式短语，c句中not only和but also后面接的都是介词短语，它们所接的短语在结构上一致，因而是正确的。这三句的句意都是“石油不仅用来炼油，还用来造塑料”，只是结构不同。由此可见，英语不只是句意的问题，还有造句形式的问题。这就告诉我们在造句时，决不能只想着汉语意思，然后翻译成英文，而是要同时关注英文句子的形式结构，做到形式与意义的和谐统一。
下面我们再来看对中文句子“这名新员工很快就显示出自己不仅有才干，而且还是一位值得信任的人”的两个译文。
5、 a. the new employee soon proved himself to be not only capable but also a man who could be trusted. (×)
b. the new employee soon proved himself to be not only capable but also trustworthy. (√)
解析：a句深受汉语原句的影响，把“一位值得信任的人”译成了a man who could be trusted这样一个带有定语从句修饰的名词短语，而它与not only后面的形容词capable不能构成平行结构，因此句子不正确。而b句把a句那个复杂的名词短语换成了一个形容词trustworthy，此时句中的两个形容词capable和trustworthy构成了平行结构，因而是一个正确的句子。
接句子（要倒装）
前文说过，作为并列连词，“not only … but also”可以接两个句子，构成平行结构。此时，not only必然位于句首，句子需要部分倒装。下面列举一个例子。
6、 not only was he capable but also he could be trusted.
解析：这个句子中not only和but also后面接了句子，因为否定词not only位于句首，所以句子应采用部分倒装——将be动词was放在主语he的前面。如果不采用倒装，句子是不正确的，也就是说我们不能写成：“not only he was capable but also he could be trusted.”
接从句（要倒装）
以上我们讨论了“not only … but also”接短语不倒装、接句子要倒装的情况，现在我要把它的用法推进一层：当这个并列连词结构连接两个并列的从句时，句子又该如何构造呢？下面笔者以改写and连接的并列宾语从句为例来说明这个问题。
7、 a. the new employee soon proved that he was capable and that he could be trusted.
这里的and连接了两个宾语从句that he was capable和that he could be trusted。如果我们要用“not only … but also”结构来改写这句话，该如何改写呢？相信有读者会造出下面的句子。
b. the new employee soon proved not only that he was capable, but also that he could be trusted.
我们看到，这里的b句是把that从句直接放在了not only和but also后面，此时not only所接的从句就不能倒装。而如果我们把not only移到that从句内部（即that后边），此时not only所接的从句就可以采用倒装结构，写成下面这个句子。
c. the new employee soon proved that not only was he capable, but also that he could be trusted.
事实上，c句这样的结构才是英语母语人士使用的。
思考与启发
通过上文，我相信读者朋友应该对“not only … but also”的用法有了全新的认识，也有了更深刻与全面的理解，不再会被“not only在句首，句子要用部分倒装”这条“盲人摸象”式的规则所误导了。当然，笔者并不是要说传统语法教学一无是处，也不是说传统语法教学告诉我们的规则或结论就一定是错误的。笔者只是想提醒大家，出于各种原因，传统的语法教学教给了我们很多片面的语法知识，然后我们的大脑就被这些片面的语法规则所禁锢，看不到英语的全貌和真相。换言之，我们大家都是在坐井观天或盲人摸象。这就往往会导致一个有趣的现象：大家根据自己所掌握的不同的、局部的英语语法知识，针对某个语法规则或造句争执不已，就像寓言故事中那群摸象的盲人一样，谁也说服不了谁，都认为自己掌握了真理。
